We are proud to present the thrilling films of Warren Sonbert, an American independent filmmaker whose work is near to our heart. As Columbia realigns itself for summer, these films may send off travelers with an expanded spirit.
We’ll show two early films (AMPHETAMINE and HALL OF MIRRORS, both 1966) in which Sonbert documents a well-documented scene – New York, Warhol-adjacent, young, gay, reverent of art and cinema – in fresh ways.
We’ll also show two of his later films (SHORT FUSE and FRIENDLY WITNESS) that are astounding experiences of cinematic rhythm and time, using series of brief shots of street and travel scenes to build crescendoes of tremendous energy and power. These may appear initially as travelogues, or personal or diaristic films expressing Sonbert’s love of opera, but over time transform into vessels of the deepest and most universal feeling — a viewing experience that becomes operatic in itself.
Presented on 16mm.
